The International Society of Soil Science established in 1986 the Working Group "Soils and Geomedicine". Professor R. Dudal, Belgium, was appointed as secretary and Professor J. Låg, Norway, chairman.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has been active in the geomedical field over the last 10 years. The two first symposia were arranged in collaboration with the scientific academies in the other Scandinavian countries.
