Our first ingredient, D-Mannose, is actually a type of sugar. It is commonly found in fruits such as cranberries. The unique properties of this simple sugar is thought to help the bladder and urinary tract by effectively reducing bacteria’s ability to adhere to the walls of the bladder and other parts of the urinary tract.

The mechanism of action for D-Mannose involves attaching to the bacteria, such as E-Coli (the leading cause of bacterial infection in the urinary system), thereby preventing the bacteria from attaching to other cells that line the urinary tract.

D-Mannose supplementation lowered UTI recurrence rates from 33.3% to 4.5% over the course of a 6-month study. In a 2013 study D-Mannose worked about as well as nitrofurantoin for prevention over a 6-month trial. D-Mannose was also shown to be more effective at prevention of UTIs than long term use of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim antibiotic therapy.

Current recommendations include the following:

To reduce episodes of recurrence: use 2g of D-Mannose daily or 1g twice daily.

For additional therapy during an active UTI: use 1g of D-Mannose three times daily x 14 days.

Cranberry

Cranberries contains proanthocyanidins (PACs), which are antioxidants that also adhere to bacteria and help prevent adherence to the lining of the urinary tract.

Cranberries are being studied for the following benefits: improved immune function, decreased infections, reduced cardiovascular disease and cancer inhibition. The PACs in cranberries were shown to exhibit antimicrobial and anti-adhesion properties against several different types of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts.

Hibiscus flower

Hibiscus flower, or Roselle, is of tropical African origin and is grown throughout the tropics and has recently shown its usefulness in treatment of UTIs and prevention of kidney inflammation.

Dandelion

Dandelion root powder contains chemicals that may support reduction of inflammation, increase urine production, and may also prevent against crystal formation which may lead to infections in the urinary system. Dandelion root’s benefits are said to provide anti-hyperglycemic, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Recommended daily intake for Dandelion Root is within the range of 250-1000 mg four times a day.
