For centuries, Marseilles Figs have been a symbol of abundance and sweetness, enchanting gardeners and gourmets alike.  Among our selection, the Marseilles Fig stands out for its delightful flavor and reliable yields.

History of the Variety: The Marseilles Fig has its roots deeply embedded in the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean. Renowned for its lush, green skin and vibrant, sweet flesh, this variety has been a staple in gardens and kitchens for generations. At his Monticello estate, Thomas Jefferson demonstrated a keen interest in cultivating figs, and the Marseilles variety was among his favorites. He was known to share cuttings of this particular fig with friends and neighbors, indicating his success and enthusiasm for this fruit.

Quick Facts: Marseilles Fig

  • Hardiness Zone: Ideal for USDA Zones 6-10, showing a strong adaptability to various climatic conditions.
  • Spacing: Recommend spacing between trees is about 8-10 feet, ensuring each fig has ample room to flourish.
  • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  • Sunlight Requirements: Loves full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for optimal fruiting.
  • Watering Needs: Moderate watering is needed, with a focus on deep watering to encourage root growth.
  • Fertilization: Benefits from organic fertilizers and compost to enrich the soil and promote healthy growth.
  • Bearing Age: Usually begins to bear fruit in the second or third year after planting.
  • Fruit Characteristics: Known for its sweet and succulent flesh, the Marseilles Fig is perfect for fresh eating, preserves, and baking.
  • Pollination: Self-fertile and does not require another variety for pollination.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Exhibits resilience against common fig pests and diseases.
  • Winter Care: Requires mulching and, in colder zones, some winter protection like burlap wrapping.
  • Container Planting: Also suitable for container gardening if space is limited.

Brief Rooting Instructions: Getting started with cuttings is relatively easy.  Plant it in a well-draining potting mix, ensuring the cutting is buried at least a few inches deep. Water it generously, place it in a warm and sunny spot, and keep the soil consistently moist. Our complete rooting instructions, which we'll send with your order, will guide you through this process step by step.

Spacing and Protection from Cold: Proper spacing and protection from cold are crucial for the thriving of your Marseilles Fig. We recommend spacing your trees at least 7 to 12 feet apart to allow for adequate growth and airflow, although espaliering these plants up a southern-facing wall can be done closer and means better protection and yields. When it comes to protecting your fig tree from chilly temperatures, we recommend cutting the plants down after they drop their leaves, mulch with 18-24" of straw around the base to insulate the roots.

What are the growing practices?

While we haven't sought organic certification, rest assured that our fig cuttings are cultivated with genuine dedication, free from artificial pesticides or fertilizers, mirroring the thoughtful care you invest in your family's meals. Eating what we grow is a philosophy we live by, ensuring that we raise our produce without noxious pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. For peak nutrition and flavor, we enrich our soil with compost, rock minerals, and prebiotics, foster habitats for beneficial insects, bees, and earthworms, and align our practices with the rhythm of nature to harvest the finest food.
