At the marsh edge before first light, the call rides against the chest and wet grass brushes the boots. A small bag hangs at the shoulder, close enough for a quick hand and narrow enough to swing clear of the shotgun. It carries what the morning asks for, and no more.
The Gentleman's Ditty Bag takes its form from the cartridge bags carried on British driven shoots: leather and canvas, antique brass throughout, a lid that lifts for fast access, and a long strap worn across the body. The American walk-in gave that form another purpose. Along a creek bottom, flooded timber edge, pond corner, or marsh point, a hunter could carry the day on a lanyard, in his pockets, and in one small shoulder bag. This is that bag brought forward for the man who still prefers to travel light.
Full-grain leather covers the lid, trims the mouth and base, forms the top handle, and carries the removable shoulder strap. Waxed canvas makes up the body. Antique brass is used throughout, from the lid buckle and press snaps to the zippers and strap clips. At 11 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 9 inches high, the proportions hold a box of shells and the small things without becoming a catch-all.
Unbuckle the leather lid and a hidden zippered accessory pouch sits underneath for the license, spare key, or anything that should stay dry. Beyond it, a top-zipper main compartment carries the shells. A front pouch with two brass press snaps keeps a second call or dog whistle close. A full-width zippered back pocket takes papers, a folded glove, and the thin things. The shoulder strap removes at both brass clips, while the sewn-in leather handle stays put for the truck seat or boat thwart.
Inside the accessory pouch, a canvas label reads DECOY · Heirloom Collection, with lines for Seasoned by and Passed to. The first name is yours to write.
