The Connect Game was originally designed by Ken Garland for Galt Toys in the UK, and it was first released in 1969. It remained a best seller for many years.
After being unavailable for quite a long time, it has just been re-released by Architoys, a Portuguese company, dedicated to the design, production and sale of architectural toys.
This classic matching game features 140 square tiles with different coloured tracks, offering a captivating and strategic gameplay experience similar to dominoes. Perfect for those who appreciate timeless design and engaging challenges.
Connect was the most successful game that Garland designed for Galt. Using simple linear structure, colour, and gestalt (pattern recognition), with no pictorial references and related associations, the game is pure graphic design. It consists of 140 cards, each displaying different numbers of straight and curved lines in black, red and blue. The aim of the game, based on the number of lines and the colour sequence, is to connect the cards – a task that can be achieved in all manner of combinations.
It comes as no surprise to learn that Ken Garland was friends with Harry Beck, the young designer of the famous map of the London Underground, which in its simple and bright colours and strict geometry could have come straight from the studio of Mondrian. In an interview in 2010, Ken Garland said 'I was a good friend of Harry Beck, the inventor of the London map or diagram, and I knew there was a game there somewhere and that proved to be. If you look at the original version of Connect you can see its link with the London Underground diagram.’
