Malfunction of the cardiovascular system forms the basis of degenerative disease: cardiovascular disease is responsible for the majority of deaths in the US, and coronary heart disease (CHD) accounts for almost 50% of the cardiovascular mortality. CHD is the major cause of premature death among men and women, thus CHD represents a modern epidemic1. It is a multi factorial condition and well-established risk factors include both genetic and lifestyle aspects. Inheritance (non modifiable factors) are male gender, family history of CHD and menopause. Factors pertaining to medical history include cigarette smoking, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled hypertension, obesity, high serum cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and elevated serum homocysteine.

A wide variety of lifestyle factors influence the risk of CHD, therefore lifestyle changes offer the possibility of decreased risk and improved health. Cigarette smoking, physical inactivity and a healthy diet play a role in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the U.S. Interventions involve diet modification, regular exercise and pharmacologic approaches as needed. Excessive alcohol consumption contributes increased risk as well. Other evidence indicates that foods rich in N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish as well as vegetables lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and that a high intake of linoleic acid (N-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids) and certain saturated fatty acids adds to the risk. Trace minerals and fiber are also important for cardiovascular health.
