Following requests from several NHS trusts for a no-nonsense tilt-in-space chair that eliminates the complexities and cleaning issues of currently available costly specialist products, the design for the Eliot Tilt-in-Space Chair was conceived. While this is not a specialist chair, it was still essential to incorporate key functions such as tilt to 45 degrees and pressure care, with full control of all features by the user.

The objectives for the design were clear:

• To improve posture to promote overall health.
• To reduce the risk of falls and sliding: Creating a stable, secure seating solution that minimises the chance of users slipping or falling from the chair.

• To assist with corrective positioning for those with kyphotic postures.
• To improve physiological processes: Supporting better circulation and comfort for the user through adjustable positioning.
• Reducing friction and shear forces to aid with pressure area care.

The Eliot Tilt-in-Space Chair strikes a balance between simplicity, comfort, and functionality. By addressing these common challenges in healthcare environments we have developed a cost effective product that can be made more available to more patients. Early feedback during trials reported that we have possibly designed the perfect hospital bedside chair.
